Patients are typically taken to surgery based on a high index of suspicion, determined by the patient’s signs and symptoms. In necrotizing fasciitis, aggressive surgical debridement (removal of infected tissue) is always necessary to keep it from spreading and is the only treatment available. Diagnosis is confirmed by visual examination of the tissues and by tissue samples sent for microscopic evaluation.

Early medical treatment is often presumptive; thus, antibiotics should be started as soon as this condition is suspected. Initial treatment often includes a combination of intravenous antibiotics including penicillin, vancomycin, and clindamycin. Cultures are taken to determine appropriate antibiotic coverage, and antibiotics may be changed when culture results are obtained.

As in other maladies characterized by massive wounds or tissue destruction, hyperbaric oxygen treatment can be a valuable adjunctive therapy but is not widely available. Amputation of the affected organ(s) may be necessary. Repeat explorations usually need to be done to remove additional necrotic tissue. Typically, this leaves a large open wound, which often requires skin grafting. The associated systemic inflammatory response is usually profound, and most patients will require monitoring in an intensive care unit.

Treatment for necrotizing fasciitis may involve an interdisciplinary care team. For example, in the case of a necrotizing fasciitis involving the head and neck, the team could include otolaryngologists, intensivists, microbiologists and plastic surgeons.

During the seven years with the company, she held the position of Brand Manager with the global responsibility for Colourings, the internationally awarded and recognised, Colour Cosmetics division of The Body Shop.

When she joined The Virgin Cosmetics Company as one of the founding directors , she was given the task of growing Virgin Vie at Home into the UK’s leading Cosmetics Party Plan business as well as developing the multi-award winning cosmetic and skin care product ranges.

In January 2009 Ros led a Management Buy-out of Virgin Vie at Home with her business partner Ratan Daryani. In order to take control of the company the team purchased the shares for £1 each. Further to this the Virgin Group wrote off £21m worth of loans and paid the new enterprise £7m worth of ‘Brand Protection’ payment, so that if the pair fail, the Virgin Brand is not endangered.

In late 2009 Ros closed the final Effective Cosmetics (Previously Virgin Cosmetics) stores, putting the chain into Administration.

In 2010 Ros was nominated for a Real Woman Award in the Retail & Consumer Section, however did not win.

A practicing physician from 1957 to 1978, Dr. Pugliese was a general practitioner, a family doctor, in rural Pennsylvania. He also contributed to the broader medical community, participating in the early efforts in limb reattachment in the US, taught at Hershey Medical School, patented dairy hygiene products, and established a methadone clinic for heroin addicts within the prison system of Berks County.

By the late 1970s, Dr. Pugliese’s distaste for the advent of “managed health care” led him to close his clinical practice, and begin an intensive study of skin physiology. Various discoveries of cell structure and function led him to design non-invasive evaluation techniques to quantify biological activity of cosmetics. His laboratory work resulted in a second career as an authority on the use of functional topicals (skin care products) to treat various non-pathological skin conditions. He holds several patents, has published hundreds of articles and has lectured on every continent. He was awarded the Maison De Navarre Award for his contributions to cosmetic science.

Dr. Pugliese contributed to the education of professional skin care practitioners in the growing field of esthetics in the US. His book series, Physiology of the Skin, (Allured Publishing) is a standard esthetic student reference. In 2005 his new textbook, Advanced Professional Skin Care, Medical Edition, replaced other teaching materials and has grown in use. By 2010, Dr. Pugliese’s textbook will be the global standard for licensing through the international licensing organization, CIDESCO.

Diazolidinyl urea is an antimicrobial preservative used in cosmetics. It is chemically related to imidazolidinyl urea which is used in the same way. Diazolidinyl urea acts as a formaldehyde releaser.

It is used in many cosmetics, skin care products, shampoos and conditioners, as well as a wide range of products including bubble baths, baby wipes and household detergents. Diazolidinyl urea is found in the commercially available preservative Germaben.

Commercial diazolidinyl urea is a mixture of different formaldehyde addition products including polymers.

Replogle earned an A.B. in government from Dartmouth College in 1988. While a student at Dartmouth, he served as student body president and was a member of Bones Gate fraternity. After leaving Dartmouth, Replogle spent five years working at the Boston Consulting Group before enrolling at Harvard Business School, where he graduated with distinction two years later.

After Harvard, he was hired by Guinness Brewery as head of strategy for Guinness Americas and Caribbean. He remained with the company (a subsidiary of Diageo) for eight years, eventually becoming President of Guinness Bass Import Co. in the U.S. and Guinness U.K. Replogle was previously the general manager for Unilever’s North American skin care division, prior to joining Burt’s Bees as President and CEO on Jan. 19, 2006.
