Premature Babies Need Omega3 Supplements For Brain Development

Premature babies born before the 33 rd week possibly have a lack of the Omega3 fatty acids DHA which is required for brain and nervous system development. By supplementing this Omega fatty acid through their mothers breast milk or bottle formula the babies were shown to develop better brain and nervous system functionality. These supplements in the form of concentrated fish oil capsules showed improvement in the mental functions of the babies.

Premature babies born before the 33 week have been shown to have insufficiently developed levels of DHA, an essential Omega3 fatty acid, required for brain and nervous system development. This lack of DHA could lead to impaired mental development in these babies.

DHA is an essential fatty acids which means that it cannot be manufactured by the body of the mother or the developing baby, but must be provided in the diet of the mother or child. Omega3 fatty acids are typically provided by foods such as cold water oily fish, certain nuts and certain grains. As a supplement they are available as concentrated fish oil capsules.

To ensure that these premature babies receive the Omega3 fatty acids they need for development of their nervous systems and brain a supplement of DHA Omega3 fatty acids was given to the mothers or included in the formula fed to the babies. This supplement was in the form of concentrated fish oil capsules for the mothers or fish oil added to the baby formula.

Those babies given the higher DHA supplement showed better mental development than those who did not receive the supplement. This was more noticeable in baby girls who were given the DHA Omega3 enriched diet.

Concentrated fish oil capsules are manufactured using a process known as micro distillation or stripping which ensures that the product is not only concentrated but free of contaminants. They are generally manufactured from cold water oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines and tuna. They obtain the Omega3 fatty acids from natural algae in their diet.

Parents of premature babies should consult with their pediatrician or general practitioner about the benefits of supplementing the diet of the mother or child with Omega3 fish oil capsules. Alternatively they should at least inform their pediatrician or GP if they decide to use such a product.

Omega3 supplements are also beneficial for the mother to overcome the effects of post partum depression.
